Due to a family emergency, Tay Gibbs will not be at the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Finals in Phoenix.
Gibbs, 20, won second place in the Xfinity Series on Saturday while driving for his grandfather’s Joe Gibbs racing team. He was in the Cup Series at 23XI Racing in place of Kurt Busch, who missed the second half of the season with a concussion at Pocono this summer.
Tajgibbs did not drive today due to a family emergency. To be determined who will drive the car.
Former Joe Gibbs Racing Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric could replace Gibbs in the No. 23 car on Sunday.
On Saturday night, Gibbs beat three JR Motorsports drivers in the winner-take-all championship to win the Xfinity Championship. Gibbs’ title came a week after beating teammate Brandon Jones to win in Martinsville.
Gibbs was booed after Martinsville sent teammates away. If Jones wins the race, JGR will put two of the four drivers in contention on Saturday. Instead, Gibbs, the team’s lone title contender, spent a week apologizing for his actions after initially appearing unapologetic after bumping into Jones.
Gibbs is widely expected to take over JGR’s No. 18 car in 2023 to replace Kyle Busch. Gibbs has 11 wins in 51 Xfinity Series races and 33 top 10 finishes.
