David Magill obituary and dead, shot and killed Thursday morning

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night in Lower Burrell to remember a local businessman, murdered that morning. Police said David Magill, owner of Mogie’s Irish Pub & Magill’s Grill, was shot outside his business. He died shortly after in the hospital. Within minutes of the shooting, police said Nathan Salem, 45, surrendered.

Jim Meyers said he is still trying to come to terms with the absence of his lifelong friend, who was like family. “It’s not easy, it’s stupid, you know. Someone comes and does something like that,” Meyers said.

Jackie Shaw, the sister-in-law of New Kensington Police Officer Brian Shaw, who was killed in the line of duty in 2017, said she had seen Magill’s kindness to his family time and time again. “In the past few years since Brian was murdered, ‘Mogie’ David Magill has done countless things for our family, from fundraising to providing moral support,” Shaw said. “He was the one that always brought us together, so we’re going to have to do that as a community.”

With many unanswered questions, Magill’s friend Pastor Dean Ward is calling on the community to focus on prayer and unity. “He left the ‘whys’ to God to let us know and just asked, ‘What can I do,'” Ward said. Nathan Salem is charged with first-degree murder.
