Awtrey enjoyed adventure through activities such as golfing, dirt biking, fishing, snowboarding and deer hunting. Hunter was a gifted athlete who excelled at football, baseball and basketball. He went to Trinity High School as a gifted student-athlete, where he graduated in 2016. One of the happiest times in Hunter’s life was spending time with his loved ones. After completing his education at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, he became involved in many college activities. As a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity’s Social Chairman and Vice President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council, he made significant contributions to the community.

He passed on July 5, 2020, due to injuries sustained from a fall. Despite this fact, his family honored his selfless request to donate his organs. Consequently, his actions inspired other individuals to help others through philanthropy.

Hunter Thomas Awtrey was born August 19, 1998 to mother Lindsey Miller and father Chris Awtrey. He grew up in Archdale and Siler City before he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 5, 2020. Hunter was a very athletic young man who enjoyed playing football, baseball, and basketball. He was also very talented and enjoyed playing youth league sports. As a result of a fall that he suffered from, Hunter passed away at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington due to severe injuries. Hunter was a senior at the University of North Carolina Charlotte studying business and finance. He graduated from Trinity High School in 2016 and was active in athletics, golfing, fishing, golf carting, snowboarding, deer hunting and dirt bike riding. Hunter was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and served as social chairman and vice-president of recruitment for the Interfraternity Council. After graduating from high school, his school plans to award his degree posthumously. He valued family immensely and regularly prioritized time with them. He was widely admired for his hard work, positive attitude, outgoing nature and close relationship with his family.
Hunter, a Christian, regularly attended First Church of God and Loves Creek Baptist Church in Archdale and Siler City. Additionally, he regularly attended Leanna Awtrey’s Trinity home church. Hunter worked as an intern at Northwestern Mutual’s Charlotte office, part of its Client Services Department. He is survived by his mother Lindsey Miller (T. R.) of Trinity; father Christopher Awtrey (Leanna) of Siler City; brother Jace Awtray; stepbrothers Caleb Alcorn and Tyler Miller; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was also dating Maggie Monroe for 5 years when he died at the age of 23. Friends and family members plan to hold a private memorial service in remembrance of their loved one. Hunter’s selfless act of donating his corneas will also bring sight to someone in need. Any BB&T branch can accept memorials to the Hunter Awtrey “My Wish” Memorial Scholarship Fund. A representative from Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City handled the arrangements.
