The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday night to remove Joe Gow as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The meeting went into closed session shortly after convening, with only one item on the agenda released late Tuesday: “Consideration of personnel actions to discipline or terminate the chancellor.”

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, the University of Wisconsin issued a statement saying UW President Joe Gao had been relieved of his leadership role.

In a revised statement, UW President Jay Rothman said he recommended Gao be fired “effective immediately.”

“Over the past few days, we have heard about Dr. Gao’s specific actions. Gao learned that this severely damaged the university’s reputation. His actions were despicable,” Rothman continued. “As a tenured professor, Dr. Gao was placed on paid administrative leave as he transitioned to a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Tonight, I took the necessary step of lodging a formal complaint with interim Chancellor Betsy Morgan concerning Dr. Gow’s tenure as a faculty member. I have requested a thorough evaluation of his tenure status. Furthermore, we have enlisted the services of an external legal firm to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this matter. We expect that the complaint will be handled in accordance with the standard procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code Ch. 4.

According to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Gow and his wife Carmen Wilson were found to have uploaded numerous videos on adult platforms such as OnlyFans and PornHub, as well as various social media sites.

Gow and Wilson, using the aliases Geri and Jay Hart, authored two books chronicling their adventures within the adult entertainment industry. Their online author bio features a photograph showcasing both individuals.

The individuals known as Geri and Jay Hart use pseudonyms to conceal their true identities. They both hold high-ranking positions at prominent American organizations and actively engage in community service and philanthropic endeavors, often making appearances in local media. Following the recent announcement, UW-La Crosse promptly released a statement appointing Provost Betsy Morgan as the interim chancellor.

In addition, the university provided students with a statement from Morgan, where she communicated her appointment.

In this period of transition as the university seeks a new permanent chancellor, I am privileged to have the opportunity to support and guide the students, faculty, and staff of UWL. I recognize the difficulties that arise from a sudden change like this, and I want to assure the campus community that my primary objective is to offer steadfast leadership in the upcoming months. Collaboration with student leadership will be a focal point as we navigate this interim period together.
