Alain Bellemare hops aboard a Bombardier Inc. aircraft assembly in Mirabel, Que., to the sound of guitar and drums from Van Halen’s hard rock song “Panama.” A temporary stage in a dark hangar at the factory.

Wearing a microphone headset and an open-collar white shirt, Bombardier’s CEO joined employees in a ceremony to celebrate the official delivery of Bombardier’s flagship CSeries aircraft to Airbus SE as a heat wave hit Eastern Canada in the early afternoon.

With purple lights swirling overhead, the trim, compact executive talks about the historic partnership between the two companies and how it gives the fledgling C-Series a chance to reach its full potential. He took a sip of water and thanked Quebec and the federal government for their support of the project before waving Airbus boss Tom Enders onstage and giving him a sweaty hug.

“This is a very exciting time,” said Mr. Bellemare, adding that he was proud of the approximately 2,000 Bombardier employees currently working for Airbus.

“Thank you so much for everything,” he said to Mr Enders. “It’s up to you now.”

With the handover to Airbus on July 1, Bombardier is relieved of operational responsibilities for the aircraft, namely sales and construction, after $6 billion in development costs nearly bankrupted the company and plunged it into debt. Bombardier remains a minority partner, generating some revenue from sales and retaining a 34% stake in the project. Mr. Bellemare is checking another box in his master plan to transform one of Canada’s largest industrial manufacturers.
