Patricia Navarro Velez dead, and Cha Jan Jerry Chang UNLV Assistant Professor

UNLV Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39 and Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, are two of three persons who were murdered yesterday at the UNLV campus. Dr. Navarro-Velez, an assistant professor of accounting, had devoted her career to educating the next generation of accountants. Dr. Cha Jan Jerry Chang was a longtime educator of management information systems.

Officials from the Clark County coroner’s office have released the identities of two of the three individuals who lost their lives on Wednesday during a shooting incident at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The victims have been identified as professors ChaJan “Jerry” Chang, 64, and Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, according to the Clark County coroner’s office. While the third victim has been identified, their relatives have not yet been notified.

Patricia Navarro Velez, specializing in accounting, held a Ph.D. in accounting and was actively engaged in research focused on cybersecurity disclosures and data analytics, as indicated by the university’s website.

ChaJan “Jerry” Chang served as an associate professor in the Management, Entrepreneurship & Technology department of the business school. His educational background included degrees from Taiwan, Central Michigan University, and Texas A&M University. He earned a Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Pittsburgh and had been a faculty member at UNLV since 2001.

The tragic incident unfolded when a gunman opened fire on the UNLV campus, resulting in the loss of three lives. Subsequently, law enforcement officers neutralized the suspected shooter.
