Heartbreaking Loss: Remembering Sloan Mattingly

Tragedy struck Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Beach on Tuesday afternoon when 7-year-old Sloan Mattingly and her 9-year-old brother, Maddox Mattingly, became trapped beneath a collapsed sand hole. The siblings, vacationing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, were digging in the sand when the accident occurred around 3:15 p.m.

In a frantic rescue effort, onlookers and first responders worked tirelessly to dig the children out from the sandy tomb. Despite the heroic efforts, Sloan was pronounced dead upon arrival at Broward Health Medical Center. Her brother, Maddox, thankfully survived.

The Mattingly family, shattered by the sudden loss of their beloved Sloan, was on vacation in South Florida. Therese Mattingly, the siblings’ mother, shared the devastating news on Facebook, describing the incident as a “freak accident” that claimed “our greatest 7.5 years.”

Sloan’s passing has left an unimaginable void in the hearts of her family, who expressed the profound impact she had as “the purest human being.” As they grapple with this incomprehensible loss, the Mattingly family is forever changed.

The Pompano Beach Fire Rescue team responded to the scene, with Maddox buried up to his chest and Sloan completely buried beneath him. The hole, which was 5 or 6 feet deep, collapsed, turning a day at the beach into a nightmare.

In this moment of grief, the community mourns alongside the Mattingly family, offering condolences and support during this harrowing time. Sloan Mattingly’s memory will forever be engraved in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. 🕊️💕 #RememberingSloan #HeartbreakingLoss #InOurHeartsForever
