Srabanti Chatterjee joined the BJP in March, just ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections earlier this year, as part of a series of high-profile signings from both sides of the race.

Bengali actress Srabanti Chatterjee, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier this year, said on Thursday she would be severing all ties with the party. The actress expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning in West Bengal and said the BJP’s “lack of initiative and sincerity” towards the welfare of the state was the reason why she decided to quit the party.

“Cut all ties with the BJP, the party I fought for in the last state elections,” Srabanti wrote on Twitter from her official handle. “The reason is that they lack the initiative and sincerity to advance the Bangladesh cause…”

Notably, Srabanti Chatterjee joined the BJP in March, just ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections earlier this year, as part of a series of high-profile signings from both sides of the race. She joined the party in the presence of then Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh and the party’s state election officer Kailash Vijayvargiya. She later unsuccessfully lost the Assembly election to the Behala Paschim constituency against Trinamool’s Chatterjee by a margin of 50,884 votes.

A dozen TV and film actors with no political background joined the saffron camp ahead of the elections, in which the BJP won only 77 of the state’s 294 assembly seats. However, with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress achieving a landslide victory in the state elections, the BJP has run out of big names to join ahead of the assembly elections in March and April The party’s large cast either started laying low or stopped immediately.

A senior leader of the Bengal BJP said that the likes of Srabanti Chatterjee, Payal Sarkar, Tanushree were not seen in any of the BJP’s programs in the past few months. · “Actors and politicians” like Chakraborty and Yash Dasgupta – both of them lost elections. Two other actors from the Bengali television and film industry, Rupa Bhattacharjee and Anindya Banerjee, said in August that they had severed ties with the BJP. Bollywood singer and politician Babul Supriyo, who twice won a Lok Sabha seat and served as a Union minister of state, also quit the BJP last month and joined the Trinamool.
