The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a woman who was seriously injured Friday after being hit by a police horse in downtown Ottawa.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Sunday they were investigating an incident between a Toronto police officer and a 49-year-old Ottawa woman who reported “serious injuries.” The incident happened on Friday night at the intersection of Rideau Street and Mackenzie Avenue near Chateau Laurier when officers on horseback tried to disperse a large crowd of protesters.

The story of an elderly woman wearing a walker who was trampled to death by mounted police circulated on social media over the weekend. Video taken at the scene showed an elderly woman in a red jacket confronting police before several mounted police officers rushed in to disperse the protesters.

The woman, identified as “Roberta Paulson” by those who shared the story, is believed to have died of her injuries. Ottawa police issued a statement on Twitter Friday saying that anyone who was knocked down was able to get up and walk away, and they were “noting any injuries.” The tweet also suggested that one of the protesters threw his bicycle at a horse in an attempt to injure it.

Interim Police Chief Steve Bell confirmed Saturday that two protesters fell after troopers were dispatched to disperse an “increasingly aggressive” crowd.

“Law enforcement officers on horseback rode through the crowd, creating isolation and lowering the temperature,” Bell said. “All I can say is that there were two protesters … who collided with the horses, they fell, and they immediately got up and started demonstrating.”

Fox News contributor Sara Carter falsely reported the woman’s death. In the days that followed, reports of the woman’s death went viral.

The woman in the video was later identified by the family as Candice Sero, a member of the Tyendinaga Mohawk First Nation. The collision with the police horse reportedly resulted in a fractured collarbone and was later treated at Monfort Hospital.

“Roberta Paulson,” the name originally used to identify the woman, is believed to be a fictional name from the film “Fight Club.” Ashli Babbit, a U.S. military veteran who died of gunshot wounds following the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, was also incorrectly identified as Roberta Paulson by users on Reddit and 4chan ( Roberta Paulsen).
